“So what brings you to the club today, Lilly?” Lady Defoe asked, rising as Clara took away their tea tray.

Lilly waved the sheet of paper. “I came for details of the memorial service. I’d like to attend.”

“Did you know Edgar well?” she asked as they wandered back to the reception area.

“Not really. Abigail and I got to know him and Susanna while we were organising the catering for Peter’s birthday party.”

Lady Defoe snapped her fingers. “Of course. You catered the event, didn’t you? Preston did tell me, but it had slipped my mind. There was no need to bother Clara, after all. I’m organising it. Neither Susanna nor Peter are in any fit state to help, although it was Susanna’s idea. So Preston asked me. I was glad to help. That’s the reason I’m here, to check the suitability of it being held indoors if the weather is poor. I must say you waited for rather a long time for the information from Clara. I wonder if there’s a problem?”

Lilly grinned. “Actually, the computer is archaic and needs warming up, apparently. I wouldn’t be surprised if she uses a crank handle. In fact, the whole office is barely out of the nineteen fifties from the quick glance I got.”

Lady Defoe laughed. “Not very subtle, Lilly, but I like your style. I’ll see what I can do. Although I suspect dear Clara will need some training if I donate a top of the range laptop. She’s used to the sort of thing Hewlett-Packard was producing in a garage donkey’s years ago. As a matter of fact, I suppose a full office re-model would be far more cost effective. I could do it in Edgar’s name.”

Lilly smiled. Leave it to Lady Defoe to go above and beyond. Clara would be pleased. They paused in front of a group photo showing the various team members and Lilly noticed Peter, Oscar, Quintin, Alison and Victoria standing in a group showing off their medals.

“They’re a very good team. Preston and I have come to watch them train a couple of times. It’s a shame Victoria is no longer a member,” Lady Defoe said with an indulgent smile.

“I thought she was their weakest link?” Lilly said.

“I don’t know where you got that impression, Lilly, but it’s not true. She was a strong team member. The only thing she lacked was the confidence to believe in her own abilities. Both girls held their own with the boys. No, if any of them were the weak link, it was Quintin. Unfortunately, the poor boy has noodles for arms. Although I believe he’s working on that. Edgar was giving him one-on-one training and I think he was seeing some good results.”

They continued through to the door, where Lilly hesitated for a moment.

“What is it?” Lady Defoe asked.

“Actually, I was wondering if you had any catering sorted out for tomorrow? I’d be happy to organise something if not.”

“That was to be my next job when I got home. I do apologise for not thinking of you first, Lilly.
